Hey there!

From a marketing perspective, 2021 has been off to a great start.

Despite the continuous challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are more bullish than ever on the opportunities the world of digital entrepreneurship provides.

May it be through the rise of new audio-first social apps, the incredible growth of video platforms, or new features by big players like Instagram. The creator economy is booming - and we hope you've already started to participate in it.

Let's take a look back at what happened during the first month of the new year.

👋 The Clubhouse hype has reached Europe

The one trend that nobody could hide from in countries like Germany since the middle of January is definitely Clubhouse.

After gaining lots of traction in its home market in the US in 2020, the audio-first social app finally made its way over to Europe and kicked off the year in the marketing and startup scene with a bang.

But as always, it's not all gold that glitters. Find out more about the chances and pitfalls of Clubhouse in our latest blog post.

📱 How to use Instagram Guides

Instagram provides plenty of opportunities for creators and brands to grow their audience and business. After the introduction of TikTok'esque short-form videos (aka 'Reels') last year, more features have been added in the meantime.

One that does not get a lot of attention yet, but can be quite useful to share creative content and engage your followers is 'Guides'. Find out how to leverage it in the first blog post we published in 2021.

📹 TikTok and Twitch: Let's talk about that

Besides Clubhouse and Instagram Guides, there are more platforms and formats for every marketer and creator to be aware of.

As highlighted by us before (e.g. in our blog post "Twitch as a marketing platform"), video in various forms provides tremendous potential to get attention in today's digital world.

Misch Strotz, Co-Founder & CEO of neon, recently shared his thoughts on Twitch, TikTok, and the 'Creator Economy' in an online presentation for the Clout Café series, which is hosted by Clout Collective

🍪  Google says it may have found a privacy-friendly substitute to cookies

For decades, cookies have been the primary way most advertisers target users online, but privacy concerns are making it less viable going forward... much to the disappointment of the 'Cookie Monster' and the entire digital ad ecosystem, which has been mostly built around them.

To find a solution for the ginormous challenge of replacing cookies, Google has been testing a new API called 'Federated Learning of Cohorts' (FLoC) that acts as an effective replacement signal for third-party cookies. Axios has more details.

🏛 Facebook preps antitrust lawsuit against Apple as fight over iOS 14 escalates

There has been lots of debate and media coverage in recent months on the monopolistic power the 'Big Tech' companies possess in our modern internet-first world. Public Senate hearings in the US and hefty fines and calls for new regulation in the EU have been some of the results of this development so far.

For the past few months, another storyline added to this development: Facebook and Apple accusing each other of 'having too much influence' in their respective spheres, clashing over user data as we already covered in our last newsletter

With Apple continuing to push for stricter privacy rules on its mobile devices, Facebook is now actually preparing an antitrust lawsuit against Tim Cook's company (which grosses more than $100bn per quarter, by the way...), turning this into a proper fight about the future of the Internet as we know it.

Wired has all the latest information on this developing story.

🎞 YouTube shares a sneak preview of 'Clips'

After adding 'Shorts' to its video content offerings, YouTube has recently teased the launch of another interesting feature called 'Clips'.

With short-form videos becoming more and more popular by the hour thanks to the continuous rise of TikTok, YouTube will (hopefully soon) enable its users to easily share their favorite parts from longer videos. Social Media Today has more info on this.

📨 Twitter is getting into newsletters after acquiring Revue

Newsletters have seen quite the renaissance over the last few years with platforms like Substack and publishers like Morning Brew having become widely popular - at least in the US.

After testing the waters with 'social audio' by launching 'Spaces' (similar to Clubhouse) and acquiring podcasting company Breaker, Twitter is now also entering the newsletter game.

Being part of Jack Dorsey's social media powerhouse, Dutch six-person startup Revue shall help Twitter users to monetize their audience. The Verge has more insights on the deal

📌 Pinterest finally adds 'Story Pins'

Pinterest has added 'Story Pins' to its app's home screen after the feature was announced already back in September last year.

As mentioned in our newsletters before, the 'Story' feature invented by Snapchat has become a true cornerstone of social media over the last few years. It is surely one of the Internet's most beloved ways to share and consume content from friends, creators, and brands alike. So it makes sense that Pinterest is adding this feature that most of its users probably know and like from other platforms as well.

There is still one big limitation though: For now, 'Story Pins' can only be created and shared by approved businesses and creators. The Verge also has more info on this update.
